Healing Yourself with Yoga Nidra
Recently I had the amazing yoga, meditation and breathwork teacher Mark Purser from Bamboo Yoga School on the podcast. We talked about taking steps towards your own healing.
We become empowered when we take our healing in our own hands, and one of the biggest and most powerful steps you can take is to befriend your nervous system.
An overstimulated nervous system can cause complete chaos in our lives. We feel agitated, sensitive, anxious, upset by the smallest thing and often reach for externals to try regain control.
Sure, alcohol may help momentarily, but long-term it only makes things worse. It exacerbates the overstimulated nervous system, we feel worse and we reach for it again, only to end up stuck in a cycle we don't know how to get out of.
"Wounds can not heal in the same environment that created them." - Gabor Mate
So what can we do?
One of the most ancient and scientifically proven ways to to calm the nervous system is through the ancient practice of Yoga Nidra or NSDR (non-sleep deep rest).
The unique meditation process is profoundly healing for the body, mind, and soul. It is a quick and guided meditation practice that many doctors are now suggesting to patients to help relieve stress and chronic illness.
When we can calm our overstimulated nervous system we:
- Sleep better
- Have the ability to respond rather than react
- Become more in control of our emotions
- Reduce cortisol and stress hormones
- Heal addictions
- Calm an overactive mind
- Retain information and learn more effectively
- Reduce anxiety and depression
- Improve our self esteem
- Increase our overall feelings of well being
All you need to do is find a place to lay down, press play and be guided through the stages of Yoga Nidra.
If you can fit it in every day, you will see many of these benefits in just a few weeks, sometimes even days. Even 3 or 4 times a week will make a big impact.
